We use the top marginal state income tax rate for each state as reported by the Tax Foundation and verified against official state revenue department data. Rates reflect 2025-2026 tax year data.
Monthly rent figures represent the median gross rent for a one-bedroom apartment in each state, sourced from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey and cross-referenced with current rental market data.
The groceries index uses a baseline of 100 representing the national average. States above 100 are more expensive than average and states below 100 are cheaper. Data sourced from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index.
Average retail gasoline prices per state sourced from the U.S. Energy Information Administration weekly retail gasoline report. Prices reflect the most recent available data.
